". . . when we say that the Church is a family, we mean it quite literally. The Church is not a reflection of the reality that is "family"—quite the opposite. The family is a reflection of the reality that is the Church." -Fr. Robert Johansen

Vatican Statues Turn Blue for Diabetes

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 14, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Two statues in St. Peter’s Square will be illuminated with blue lights Friday night to mark World Diabetes Day.

This the first time Vatican City is participating in the world day by illuminating the statues of Sts. Peter and Paul with blue lights, reports L’Osservatore Romano.

World Diabetes Day, initiated in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization, is commemorated in more than 160 countries.

Some 990 monuments throughout the world will be illuminated with blue lights to mark the day. Other activities include races, television programs, conferences, exhibitions and free diabetes screenings.

The objective of World Diabetes Day is to promote global awareness of the disease. This year’s theme is “Diabetes in Adolescents and Children.”

Thanks for your posts re type 1 diabetes, I’ve got a toddler diagnosed in February. I’ll be reading more to see how a catholic perspective on family applies there, I need to do better with that!
