The Great Courses
I was positively delighted today to find that my local library had “The Great Courses” from The Teaching Company.
I picked up The Foundations of Western Civilization and began listening to it this evening in hopes it would be suitable for my 9th grader. It is - and I am thrilled to have this very valuable resource available. I’m also enthralled by them. I have listened to the first 3 lectures already (about 45 min. each) and am looking forward to hearing more tomorrow.
I also picked up The Great Ideas of Philosophy. . .because I do so like philosophy.
Check to see if your library carries this series - from what I can tell so far, they are well worth a look.

You are blessed that your library carries these. Wa-hoo!
My library doesn’t have any.
I spent a small mint ordering some of the math programs for my 14 yr old. My oldest will be doing the Algrebra I class with his brother since he has to take it at college and could really use a step-by-step refresher course.
Anyway, I am quite pleased with our purchase. Very pleased. My son actually seems to “like” doing math and he “gets” it. It’s great!
Our library system only carries a few of this series. But I previewed one called “Economics”….just watched the first three lectures, as you did. I found it fascinating.
I’ll be curious how some events in history are portrayed….ie) the Church, Reformation, etc. Keep us updated.
These are only on loan for 3 weeks and not renewable in our system. I may keep my eye out for them on eBay.
Michele,
Thanks for the heads up, Michele!
As the brain gets older, I find that I don’t think as clearly! I never even imagined that our library would have these–they do–I got 155 matches when I did a search!
