Sleepy

vouet_simon_sleepingvenus_c1635.jpgWe took Matthew’s crib down a few days ago and put him in a bed. We really needed to because the crib was starting to fall apart and we were afraid it wasn’t safe. Kevin took it outside and chopped it apart with an ax because, 1. we didn’t want to put it out for the trash and have someone take it and use it (being unsafe) and 2. well that’s what 14 yr. old boys like to do. . . chop things up. ;-) I told Kevin that there must be some symbolism in there somewhere as he chopped apart the crib that was originally bought for him.

Anyway, we have been putting this off because we have done this enough times to know what it means. Sleepless nights of training the the new bed sleeper to actually STAY in the bed. Oh he was fine the first few days but it seems the novelty has worn off and though he still loves the bed, he loves the idea of being able to get out of it and come downstairs even better.

So last night it began. He woke up around 11:00 and try as we might he didn’t go back to sleep until 3 AM! Trust me we tried everything from lying down with him to bringing him into our bed (where he slept until he was a year old anyway). Nothing worked until finally he just went back to sleep. What absolutely amazes me is that he still woke up at his usual 7 AM time and is happy and wide awake even now! I am not. The coffee is brewing right now in fact.

Michelle,

This may be totally against your style, but I wanted to share that we tried Dr. Weissbluth’s idea of the “Silent Return to Bed.” I would recommend checking out one of his books if you are still working on sleep training, we had a “jack in the box” at bedtime, and after two tough nights (for us and for him) of being strong about the silent return, he has been great about bedtime for the past two years.

good luck!
