In rememberance . . . of birds.

Sign_road_work_ahead Maggie is my nature lover. She plans to have a very large farm when she grows up and several horses, so she “won’t need a car”. :-) Every time we drive somewhere she spends the entire trip gazing out the window and commenting. Riding home from Irish dance class today she got very excited and declared “Oh look, a bird died there!” Since we were stopped at a red light both Mary and I looked out the window and said “Where?”. Pointing to a road construction sign she replied “Right there where that sign is.” Still puzzled because neither Mary nor I could see the bird, I said “huh?”. Impatiently she explained, “Mommy, don’t you remember when we saw that dead bird in the street by our house and they put one of those signs up?” Realization dawned on me and I tried (as always) not to burst into laughter. “Sweetie those signs are for road work…not to tell you a bird died there.” “Oh” she said quietly. I couldn’t help but smile at her
innocence. My poor sweet little nature lover –to her it made perfect sense that you would put up a sign where a bird had died!

Last year a blackbird’s nest fell out of the hedge between ours and our neighbour’s gardens, killing three fledglings. The girls (mine plus neighbour’s) gave them a full funeral - prayers at the graveside and a memorial inscribed:

“Our beloved birds, Milly, Molly and Mandy, who died by falling out of their nest on [date]. RIP ”

Maggie would have approved ;)

That is the sweetest thing I’ve heard all week. I think my girls, bird-lovers all, would agree with Maggie that a sign should indeed be erected at the site of every bird’s demise. Oh, I love that. So sweet.
