“Knight” Light
I told Peter I would pick up a night light for him today when I was out shopping and he wanted to know if a night light was a knight that would come out and say “I think you need to go to sleep now”. I laughed and said “no sweetie but what a great idea!” But I Googled “knight light” this evening and it turns out you can buy them (though I don’t think they talk). Hmm. . .looks like Peter will be getting a real “knight light” for Chrsitmas!
Sleepy
We took Matthew’s crib down a few days ago and put him in a bed. We really needed to because the crib was starting to fall apart and we were afraid it wasn’t safe. Kevin took it outside and chopped it apart with an ax because, 1. we didn’t want to put it out for the trash and have someone take it and use it (being unsafe) and 2. well that’s what 14 yr. old boys like to do. . . chop things up.
I told Kevin that there must be some symbolism in there somewhere as he chopped apart the crib that was originally bought for him.
Anyway, we have been putting this off because we have done this enough times to know what it means. Sleepless nights of training the the new bed sleeper to actually STAY in the bed. Oh he was fine the first few days but it seems the novelty has worn off and though he still loves the bed, he loves the idea of being able to get out of it and come downstairs even better.
So last night it began. He woke up around 11:00 and try as we might he didn’t go back to sleep until 3 AM! Trust me we tried everything from lying down with him to bringing him into our bed (where he slept until he was a year old anyway). Nothing worked until finally he just went back to sleep. What absolutely amazes me is that he still woke up at his usual 7 AM time and is happy and wide awake even now! I am not. The coffee is brewing right now in fact.
In rememberance . . . of birds.
Maggie is my nature lover. She plans to have a very large farm when she grows up and several horses, so she “won’t need a car”.
Every time we drive somewhere she spends the entire trip gazing out the window and commenting. Riding home from Irish dance class today she got very excited and declared “Oh look, a bird died there!” Since we were stopped at a red light both Mary and I looked out the window and said “Where?”. Pointing to a road construction sign she replied “Right there where that sign is.” Still puzzled because neither Mary nor I could see the bird, I said “huh?”. Impatiently she explained, “Mommy, don’t you remember when we saw that dead bird in the street by our house and they put one of those signs up?” Realization dawned on me and I tried (as always) not to burst into laughter. “Sweetie those signs are for road work…not to tell you a bird died there.” “Oh” she said quietly. I couldn’t help but smile at her
innocence. My poor sweet little nature lover –to her it made perfect sense that you would put up a sign where a bird had died!
A unexpected blessing
I made a joke last week about either having spring cleaning fever or being pregnant because I came home from Memphis and cleaned my kitchen from top to bottom. Well it may be spring cleaning fever but as it turns out, I am pregnant! It wasn’t planned but it’s certainly welcomed. The funny part is that we found out on April 1st and all the children (except the oldest - clever man) thought it was an April fool’s joke! But it’s most definitely not a joke and now I can look back over the last few weeks and suddenly make sense of seemingly random things. Like how I keep dropping things, why I’m so tired all the time, why smells have become so much more noticeable and why I burst into tears when I got lost in Nashville last week and nearly burst into tears again later when the hostess at Cracker Barrel asked me how my day was going (poor girl).
Funny story: Last week dd Maggie (who is 6) told me she wanted us to have another baby and said “this time I think it would be really neat if we had a Chinese baby.” Trying very hard not to burst out laughing I explained to her that to have a Chinese “tummy” baby either mommy or daddy would have to be Chinese…and we’re not. She was clearly disappointed and replied “Oh, I was hoping the baby could teach us Spanish”. Again, trying not to laugh I said “do you mean Chinese?” Realizing her mistake she said “Oh yes that’s what I meant!” and then I had to disappoint her again and explain to her that babies aren’t born knowing how to speak the language of their ethnicity. It really was adorable!
And now I’m going to go take a nap.
