There seems to be a good bit of speculation as to the wisdom of Sarah Palin being VP since she still has such young children. I don’t know and I don’t think it really does much good to speculate. Whether or not we would choose the same path is really irrelevant. Our situations aren’t the same and we aren’t all called to the same things.
But, lest we forget, we live in difficult times in a country that is steeped in a culture of death. For the moment all eyes are on this woman —a mother of five who is unequivocally pro-life. That’s a very good thing!
How many queens of ages past have governed well while still mothering well? Countless I would imagine. And with Sarah Palin we’re not talking about a lifetime but really just a term or two (God willing!)
This woman has the potential to effect real change even if only through her public example and the awareness that her story will bring. The real question we need to be asking here is how can we help? What can we do to help Sarah Palin be both a good mother and a good VP?
We need to pray. Pray for her, her family and our country. I really mean that. Let’s ask God to send this woman all the help she needs to fulfill this role. If God has truly called her to it He will provide, but as her brothers and sisters in Christ we need to do what we can to support her.
Most especially let’s not forget to ask Mary, our very own Queen and Mother to intercede with us in this very important time in our nation’s history.

EXCELLENT! post, Michele. We as individuals, and as a Christian/Catholic people, have been praying against the diabolical attack that is on our families and our nation. Can this be the answer to our prayers?
I can’t help but think of “The Feminine Genius”, and is this woman called at this time in our nation’s history?
Yes, let us pray for Sarah Palin, and let us ask for JPII’s intercession! It will take a miracle to overturn Roe-V-Wade, but we just might be on our way!

Wonderful post Michele, prayer is what we need.

Well said. I have been struggling with this question in my mind. I am not a feminist and I truly believe that a woman’s “job” is her husband and family. At the same time, I am thrilled that she is completely pro-life. Your suggestion to let God be God and to pray for His will and the Blessed Mother’s intercession is wonderful. So I will pray, pray, pray and trust that God knows what is best. Thanks for the clarity!!!

Well said, Michele. Sarah Palin’s moral values, especially her vibrant pro-life witness can only be a good role model for this nation. Like most mothers who home educate, I have struggled to find a proper balance with this and my writing, and have shared about this many times on my blog, but I agree that we must not tear down this admirable woman who stands to do so much good for this nation. I agree with Molly that this election is pivotal; we are one Supreme Court justice away from overturning Roe v Wade.
I’ll be starting a nine week election novena tomorrow with Priests for Life. Let’s pray that Our Lady will guide voters to choose good pro-life candidates to lead America.

I agree - I like to remind myself that we are all called to different things, that God has different plans for us all. Different can be good.

What you say about prayer is truly valuable and good. I also appreciate your moderate tone when defending Sarah Palin. I, myself, was thrilled to hear of McCain’s pick of a very truly pro-life VP, and hearing of her 3-month-old child with a disability barely entered my mind. But hearing about her pregnant daughter, on top of that, just made my heart drop. It is so easy for us as pro-life citizens to get caught up in the excitement, the hope of turning back the legislative tide, the fear of having such a pro-death president as Obama. But I think as pro-life women, mothers, and all Christians, we must keep our heads on straight about the choices this woman is making. Saying “we’re all different” is too over-simple; such reasoning can lead to a position like Biden’s on abortion (the “I can’t force my views on others” cop-out). We need to stand firm for ALL our values in family life if we are to have any hope of becoming a primarily pro-life nation.
That said, I do not wish to judge Palin or any such thing; I simply find it sorrowful that the situation is what it is. I certainly pray for McCain/Palin to win this election, but I also pray that her children will be guided and consoled by Christ in their time of need, and I pray that the right message is being sent to our country, pro-life and pro-abortion alike, in all the fullness of the truth.
At any rate, I am grateful that all of this brings such central family issues into the mainstream political spotlight! Many prayers of thanksgiving for that! And thank you for focusing this drama where it should be, on earnest prayer, and reminding me.
(sorry for the very long post!)
