I have a Minolta DiMAGE Z1. It’s a bit more than just a point and shoot camera (though it does that very well too) in that you can make adjustments to aperture, shutter speed etc. if you want to. Or you can just set it to automatic and get really great shots that way too. One of the pluses of this camera is that it has a 10X optical zoom which allows you to get some really nice close up shots.
I did my research before buying and this camera came up as one of the top 10 digitals under $300. It has definitely been that for me!
