". . . when we say that the Church is a family, we mean it quite literally. The Church is not a reflection of the reality that is "family"—quite the opposite. The family is a reflection of the reality that is the Church." -Fr. Robert Johansen

Wednesday afternoon sewing class

I’m playing with my serger today, learning some new techniques.

I’ve had my serger for almost a year now but I haven’t done much with it other than regular serging (which is great and if that’s all it did I would still be happy!).

A big reason is because the “how to” video it came with is on an actual video tape and the only vcr we have is in the basement rec. area . . . far from my sewing machine.

But last night I figured out a very “low” tech way to get it on my computer.  I set up my digital camera in front of the TV, told everyone to be quiet (remember I said “low” tech) and recorded it right onto my SD card.  It worked!  Now I can watch the video on my laptop, up here in my sewing area.
:-)   I’m happy.

So today I learned how to make a rolled edge and picot:

The rolled edge is perfect for napkins I’m working on.

I learned how to use the elastic foot:

which will help the swimsuits I am going to make go together a lot faster.

And I learned how to use the shirring or gathering foot:

which means more tired ruffled skirts are in my girl’s future!

(Yes the test fabric is hideous but that’s what ugly fabric is good for —practicing.)

Tonight is our first Stitch & Fellowship since last year and the tornado watch was just cancelled.

I’ll be stitching and fellowshipping tonight!

the elastic foot has some serious possibilities, too. hmnn…i wonder if my serger has any feet? i’m just so in love with the easy and quick of the kids clothes i haven’t even thought to do more…

Ooh, I love your serger. I hope some day to have enough time to sew to justify getting one. I can think of many ways to use one, just don’t have the time right now. Maybe once my job is over at the end of the month….. And maybe a trip out toward your neck of the woods, since I grew up about 40 minutes from there.

I’ve owned one for about 6 months now but haven’t been game enough to give it a shot! Thanks for your post.. another little bit of inspiration for me to learn how to use it ;-)
