Happy Feast Day Tony!

padua.JPGToday is the memorial of St. Anthony of Padua, priest & doctor.

Nearly everywhere St. Anthony is asked to intercede with God for the return of things lost or stolen. Those who feel very familiar with him may pray, “Tony, Tony, turn around. Something’s lost and must be found.”

The reason for invoking St. Anthony’s help in finding lost or stolen things is traced back to an incident in his own life. As the story goes, Anthony had a book of psalms that was very important to him. Besides the value of any book before the invention of printing, the psalter had the notes and comments he had made to use in teaching students in his Franciscan Order.

A novice who had already grown tired of living religious life decided to depart the community. Besides going AWOL he also took Anthony’s psalter! Upon realizing his psalter was missing, Anthony prayed it would be found or returned to him. And after his prayer the thieving novice was moved to return the psalter to Anthony and to return to the Order, which accepted him back. Legend has embroidered this story a bit. It has the novice stopped in his flight by a horrible devil, brandishing an ax and threatening to trample him underfoot if he did not immediately return the book. Obviously a devil would hardly command anyone to do something good. But the core of the story would seem to be true. And the stolen book is said to be preserved in the Franciscan friary in Bologna.

In any event, shortly after his death people began praying through Anthony to find or recover lost and stolen articles. And the Responsory of St. Anthony composed by his contemporary, Julian of Spires, O.F.M., proclaims, “The sea obeys and fetters break/And lifeless limbs thou dost restore/While treasures lost are found again/When young or old thine aid implore.” (from http://www.stanthony.org)

Prayer to Find What Is Lost

St. Anthony, when you prayed, your stolen book of prayers was given back to you. Pray now for all of us who have lost things precious and dear. Pray for all who have lost faith, hope or the friendship of God. Pray for us who have lost friends or relatives by death. Pray for all who have lost peace of mind or spirit. Pray that we may be given new hope, new faith, new love. Pray that lost things, needful and helpful to us, may be returned to our keeping. Or, if we must continue in our loss, pray that we may be given Christ’s comfort and peace.

Amen.

Thirteen years ago when I was pregnant with my 5th son I seemed to have special favor with St. Anthony. Every time I needed something he came through so I promised if I had a boy I would name him Anthony. I did and now this child does indeed seem to have favor with his patron.

Happy Feast day Anthony!

The menu

Here’s what we came up with. We shopped this morning and now I have Kevin figuring out the cost of each meal.

Nothing very exciting on the menu - we’re pretty plain folk here. :-)

Don’t miss this!

A lot of you already know about this, but some of you may not. It’s the very first annual DanielleBean.com charity raffle.

The cause is St. Gianna Maternity Home in Warsaw, ND. St. Gianna Home is a 9,000 square foot home that welcomes women in crisis pregnancies (regardless of faith), provides them with a safe, secure environment in which to live, and gives them access to the medical, educational, and professional services they need to choose life for their babies.

Like Danielle I too can’t think of a more positively pro-life ministry than that!

If you donate just $5 you get a chance to win one of 55 (yes 55!) very nice prizes. That’s right every $5 you donate to St. Gianna Maternity Home will earn you one chance in a random drawing. Go over there and check it out. And donate - you might win!
