". . . when we say that the Church is a family, we mean it quite literally. The Church is not a reflection of the reality that is "family"—quite the opposite. The family is a reflection of the reality that is the Church." -Fr. Robert Johansen

A poem for Autumn

The Autumn by Elizabeth Barrett Browning Go, sit upon the lofty hill, And turn your eyes around, Where waving woods and waters wild Do hymn an autumn sound. The summer sun is faint on them — The summer flowers depart — Sit still — as all transform’d to stone, Except your musing heart. How there you sat in summer-time, May yet be in your mind; And how you heard the green woods sing Beneath...

Poetry Friday – a favorite

The Autumn by Elizabeth Barrett Browning Go, sit upon the lofty hill, And turn your eyes around, Where waving woods and waters wild Do hymn an autumn sound. It’s my feast day!

Feast of the Archangels Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael St. Michael is one of the principal angels; his name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against the enemy and his followers. Four times his name is recorded in Scripture. Following these Scriptural passages, Christian tradition gives to St. Michael four offices: * To fight against Satan. * To rescue the souls of the...

A writing of St Vincent de Paul

Serving the poor is to be preferred above all things Even though the poor are often rough and unrefined, we must not judge them from external appearances nor from the mental gifts they seem to have received. On the contrary, if you consider the poor in the light of faith, then you will observe that they are taking the place of the Son of God who chose to be poor. Although in his passion he almost lost the appearance...

As you can see I have changed my template again. The previous one was for summer – now it’s fall. Fall is my favorite season! There’s a chill in the air and I’m sipping hot tea again (Chai being the preferred flavor at the moment). Be sure to check in here on Monday October 2nd as I will be hosting the Loveliness of Autumn blog faire. It’s sure to be a treat as we explore Autumn from...

Here’s Mary in her new outfit – just in time to wear to the church mission this evening. The skirt is Butterick B4722. The original design has pleats all the way around and a back zipper but we changed it a little bit. The front is pleated but we eliminated the back zipper and pleats and added elastic at the back instead. The top is a “re-fashion”. The sleeves and hem were too long so I...

It’s Autumn!

A poem for “poetry Friday” and the beginning of Fall. September by Helen Hunt Jackson The goldenrod is yellow; The corn is turning brown; The trees in apple orchards With fruit are bending down. The gentian’s bluest fringes Are curling in the sun; In dusky pods the milkweed Its hidden silk has spun. The sedges flaunt their harvest In every meadow-nook; And asters by the...

Matty enjoying his feast day...

Happy Feast Day Matty!

Today is the Feast of St. Matthew for whom my youngest child is named. Apostle and evangelist. Matthew is spoken of five times in the New Testament; first in Matt., ix, 9, when called by Jesus to follow Him, and then four times in the list of the Apostles, where he is mentioned in the seventh (Luke, vi, 15, and Mark, iii, 18), and again in the eighth place (Matt., x, 3, and Acts, i, 13). The man designated in Matt.,...

Pretty things

A few weeks ago I decided I need a pretty notebook to write my ideas (mostly sewing and gift ideas) in.So I designed a cover and the inside pages and my husband punched and coiled it for me. In the end I had printed enough pages for two notebooks so one became my sewing ideas book and the other a general ideas book. I keep the blue one upstairs in my sewing area and the pink one on my desk in the den. The inside...
