". . . when we say that the Church is a family, we mean it quite literally. The Church is not a reflection of the reality that is "family"—quite the opposite. The family is a reflection of the reality that is the Church." -Fr. Robert Johansen

Fastnacht Day!

Today is fastnacht day! Fastnachts are a Pennsylvania Dutch Shrove Tuesday tradition. We Lancaster Countians celebrate Shrove Tuesday by eating yeast raised potato doughnuts, which are lovingly known as “Fastnachts.”The name “Fastnacht” is German for “Fast Night.” Fastnacht Day is a day to forget about dieting and feast on doughnuts! It’s a custom that had its beginnings...

I think it’s great – I sure hope everyone else does too! I put up a new website yesterday and with teaser pictures. There’s no links to inside pages yet but there will be soon. so stay tuned! ...

The hazards of the written word. . . especially online.

Time and time again I’ve seen misunderstandings in e-mail that have resulted in hurt feelings and completely unnecessary drama because someone mistook what someone else wrote. Frankly I’m weary of it – but that’s not the point. I think there are several reasons why this occurs and Nancy over at Flying Stars has posted a link to a news piece that gives insight into this frustratingly common...

Morning tea. . .again.

The coffee pot is broken. It was somehow mysteriously [i.e. no one knows how!] cracked yesterday and now is unusable. It went out with the trash this morning. I am forced to drink only tea this morning and though I love tea there are just some mornings [Mondays] when you really do need a good cup of coffee. True, there’s a “Turkey Hill Minut Market” just 3 blocks away – but it’s...

Forgotten man – St. Valentine

Such little significance is attached to the memory of St. Valentine that even in the Spanish capital of Madrid in 2005 only a handful of people visited the Church of St. Anton, where what is believed to be his skeleton is kept on a side altar in a glass-fronted baroque case. The giving of...

Morning tea

I’m up early working on my next planner project and enjoying a pot of tea while it’s still quiet. It’s looks to be a full day ahead. My dh has been suffering for months with a herniated disk. He’s had physical therapy, massage, and chiropractic care all to no avail. Today he is having steroid injections in the hopes that he can avoid surgery. Add to that a stomach virus has been raging...
